Trump Can Use Obama Justice Department Policies Against Sanctuary Cities

Drugs are pouring into our metropolitan areas from south of the border.  As a result, drug problems are plaguing many of our cities and suburban areas.  Although local police are doing their best to stem the tide of drugs, it is an uphill battle especially since Obama has maintained an open southern border.  Adding to this dilemma, Obama has quietly commuted the sentences of over 800 criminals primarily those who were convicted of drug offenses.  By releasing the drug criminals, you can be sure they will return to ply their drug trade in their home cities and towns. In addition, the Obama Administration has cut off supplying the SWAT teams and regular police forces from receiving surplus army vehicles and specialized weapons.  It was controversial when he did it but now it will become more significant.

There is one more thing that the sanctuary cities didn’t take into account when they announced their defiance of cooperating with the federal government over the illegal immigrants.  Back in July Obama’s Justice Department adopted new policies that will bar some of these sanctuary cities from receiving federal law enforcement grants.  This is absolutely true!  The Obama Administration has made it possible for the Trump Administration to use the policies that the Obama Justice Department created to cut grants to the police departments in some of the sanctuary cities.

Here is what one news outlet reported of the new Obama Justice Department policy:

According to guidance issued by the DOJ’s Office of Justice Programs, cities that refuse to honor Section 1373 of the United States Code will no longer be eligible for the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) and the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) grants.

Section 1373 prohibits ‘government entities and officials from taking action to prohibit or in any way restrict the maintenance or intergovernmental exchange of [immigration status] information, including through written or unwritten policies or practices.’

Some cites have so-called ‘sanctuary’ policies on the books that prohibit local law enforcement agencies from providing such information to federal immigration agencies.”

Republican Texas Representative John Culbertson, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, pushed the Justice Department to put the policies in place after the murder of Kate Steinle in San Francisco. The city has a sanctuary policy and her murderer deliberately went to San Francisco due to the city’s sanctuary policies.  The San Francisco sheriff’s department refused to honor a detainer request for the illegal alien issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  Instead, the killer was released.

State governments are also not allowed to provide subgrants to cities that violate Section 1373.

Representative Culberson stated very clearly the choice sanctuary cities face, ““State and local governments must now choose between receiving federal law enforcement grant money or protecting dangerous criminal illegal aliens. They can no longer do both.”

“Sanctuary cities are a hub for illegal aliens and criminal activity, and we’ve seen the tragic results of these policies time and time again,” he added.

The liberal mayors of sanctuary cities are putting their resident in danger by refusing to cooperate with federal officials and obey federal laws.  The situation can only end in tragedy.  Don’t be surprised by the increase in crimes in these cities.  They are bringing it on themselves.

Would you want to live in those cities?
