Liberal Insanity

It was Einstein who coined this definition of insanity, “Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” I am amazed how liberals feel the way to solve social problems like poverty, immigration, education, etc. is to throw more money at the problem. Yet government statistics show that the more money that is thrown at the problem, the bigger the problem grows.

Here is an example. My roommate from college went on to become the chief regional accountant for a major corporation. He has travelled extensively around the world. So he is a man who knows finance.

Recently I asked him why Illinois, where he lives, keeps electing the same people over and over and state debt keeps growing. The state’s public pension system is underfunded and growing to a point that it cannot be sustained according to independent analysis. Corruption is rampant. As a result, the newspaper USA Today stated that 50% of the citizens of Illinois would like to move out of the state.

His response to me was that people are tied into a liberal ideology that says we need more government, higher taxation and more regulations to get out of the financial mess. Despite the contrary evidence, people believe the hype and vote in the same people with the same results. Insanity!

There is a demographic switch occurring in the United States. Retiring people are moving primarily to certain states in the south. Since retired people are generally on a fixed income, they have to wisely conserve and use their money. The states they retire to are generally Republican states that have low taxes and have cut government spending. Low spending by a state means a state can cut taxes that benefit all classes of society, especially the poor. More money into the pockets of people is an incentive to spend. Spending creates prosperity for a state. Taxes tend to be a drag on an economy.

Low taxes also draw corporations into a state because corporate must always look at their bottom line. If they don’t make profits, there is no expansion, less jobs and the state collects less taxes. This is why more corporations are moving south. Boeing Corporation is an example.

Yet there are people who defeat the very reason why they move to a state by taking their big government ideology with them when they move. For example, New Hampshire used to be a conservative state. Many retired citizens of Massachusetts moved to New Hampshire partly because of low taxes; however, they are voting in liberals who want to spend more money on their pet projects. Guess what? Taxes are rising.

Liberals truly give credence to Einstein’s definition of insanity. Rather than adopt the financial strategies of states that are financially successful, they remain faithful to their ideology of bigger government, more spending and higher taxes. Are they ignorant or in denial?
