Peace! Land! Bread!

One of the things I look for in politicians is integrity. Do they do what they promise?

Obama promised to cut the deficit in half, have transparency, increase jobs, etc. Little or none of his promises have been fulfilled. His promises remind me of an old consumer ad, “Promise her anything but give her Arpege.” (I believe the name of the perfume is spelled correctly.) In short, make promises but don’t keep them. This is exactly what Lenin did to win and retain control over Russia and I believe Obama is doing the same thing today to get re-elected.

Historically this was the method used by Lenin when he was inserted into Russia by the Germans in 1917. He promised the Russian people, Peace! Land! Bread!

Yes, Lenin signed a peace treaty with Germany in 1917 taking Russia out of World War I. But peace was illusive! There was first a civil war with the White Russians who wanted to restore the monarchy. After defeating the White Russians, the Bolsheviks turned their Red Armies westward to overrun the new reconstituted nation of Poland to get to Germany to help their Communist allies in that nation. They failed because the Poles fought them tooth and nail and finally drove them back and forced them to concede defeat. So much for peace!

The peasants thought the Bolsheviks would break up the nobles’ estates and grant them their own plots of land. Instead, the farms were controlled by the central government and the peasants were returned to what was virtual serfdom under the communists. There were no private farms only government-controlled collective farms.

Few people are aware that starvation was responsible for killing millions of Russians during the Russian Civil War and afterwards. The government run collective farms were disasters. They could not produce enough food for the masses. Russia actually had to import food because of the inefficiency of collective farms. The Communist didn’t care because their sole concern was retaining power. Bread for everybody was just another empty slogan.

Promises made but not kept are a warning sign. It is up to the American people to use their votes to elect those who keep their promises. If there are no consequences for the politicians like Obama, democracy is lost.
